OK Kool (Shot By Lawless Universal) - 1Sauney
Gee Ballard
Sauney and Lawless Universal get together for this visual in what is a light hearted but also compelling and confident take for Sauney. A very fun take on one of his freestyles which he is known to drop in between Singles and projects as a way to feed the fans and this one definitely does that. Some songs you can hear and instantly catch certain lines and know “This is the one the people will scream at the shows.”
And the first stanza is no slouch in that department.
“When you wrong, you callin
Damn right I’m not gon answer
Our love, it was growing, but girl you is a cancer…”
Sometimes catching the listeners attention early on is the most key part of the song I think that was done well as Sauney provides his signature mellow flow that almost sounds like a whisper but it’s also a very clever way to force the listener to be that much more clued in to what’s being said. The ljne about her being a cancer is a double entendre you can miss if you don’t really think of it. Obviously alluding to the definition of Cancer and Sauney feeling like he can’t grow with this woman, but moreover it may be just Sauney saying they aren’t compatible due to her Zodiac sign. Either way a very clever way to allow the listener to interpret.
The visuals open with Sauney taking a walk through the city simply trying to display how he feels and his vibe. Mall security unfortunately wanted to be lame and stop he and Lawless from filming in the location so we get a quick panel of that which is great. It’s always fun to learn small details like that of what drove a person to use one location or another and things like this tend to happen to up and coming artists simply trying to display their art. Despite that, the boys prevail at making a very solid visual. I love the simplicity of the video style as it matches Sauney’s approach to the song. Very fun and laid back raps without a lot of over the top cadences or tempo switches. A great track to vibe and hear in a show or club and just kind of get in mode as we like to say. I did love the detail of adding the repeat images when Sauney drops his Austin shout out to kind of simulate that feeling of repetition in the mind. Stuff like that can help a song or a lyric stick out and with a person moreso because they have a specific visual cue to remind them of that line even when other parts of the song escapes you, which is great seeing as how if you have even one line someone can remember or sing along to that they like you are on the right track.
“Feel like 2Glocks had to change my Standards!
Feel like 2 Glocks Had to change my standards)
(That’s a deep cut, ‘IYKYK’ sort of line for the fans in the know and aware of Sauney’s friend and RWM Label Alum Austin2Glocks’ single Standards. Okay sorry back to the review)
I also really enjoyed the defiance in the guys when being turned away from the Mall they still managed to pull off doing donuts in the parking lot. Fuck establishment lol no seriously though, this is the type of stuff you like to see in a video even in small sample sizes. Work with what you’re given and still make the best of it. We also get a cool camel shot of Sauney’s right hand, rapper Nick G who I’ve previously reviewed so that’s always cool to see. Rappers in other rappers videos is a staple in hip hop and it’s also fun when we know the artists are working closely like Sauney and Nick G have been as of recent. They have collabed on both past and future including ‘Pool Boys’ which is still yet to get an official release date and the upcoming project dropping this Friday August 12th, titled Flu Game Tapes Vol. 1 . Be sure to click the Pre Save link below to check that out when it drops and pre save it of course so you can be one of the first to access the project on all streaming platforms.
I can’t express how much I really enjoyed this song right down to the fading outro in the end, accompanied by subtitles to follow along with Sauney’s now morphed audio that’s reminiscent of Mac Miller’s famous Cam Rillem persona.
“I used to take lotta pills
I ain’t wanna live…
Now we in the hills…”
Even in the party or vibe tracks such as this one, slick introspective lines like this always resonate with me as someone who’s experienced depression and stress hearing Sauney allude to those battles and how he’s recently overcome them through success is powerful even if it may be overlooked by some. What isn’t the craziest line to you will be some listeners favorite and I try to remind myself that and make sure I delve into all the lyrics I can in these sorts of reviews.
Overall I really enjoyed this visual a very clean and entertaining approach to this track and Sauney did great as he always does by delivering some quality raps and staying cool in a way that many artists can do. Be sure to hit the link below for access to the Pre Save Link for Sauney’s upcoming project ‘Flu Game Tapes Vol. 1’ make sure you grab you a pack of Woods (or cones if that’s your style lol) and smoke one or two and check out some great music from Sauney.
Some tracks I’d recommend to get you started from his catalog I enjoyed are in no particular order “745”, “Ideas”, and “Frenzy”.
